Nevada DMV Rolls Out Online Written Tests for Aspiring Drivers
CARSON CITY – In a move to digitize and streamline its services, the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has launched an online platform allowing applicants for instruction permits or non-commercial Class C driver licenses to undertake their written tests online. This initiative, accessible via the DMV website, marks a significant step towards simplifying the testing process for Nevadans.
The online testing feature, operational through the website dmv.nv.gov, is engineered by DMV's vendor partner, Intellectual Technology, Inc. (ITI). It facilitates applicants in setting up an account, authenticating their identity, and completing the basic Class C knowledge tests from the comfort of their homes, although currently, the system doesn't support touchscreen devices.
DMV Director Julie Butler highlighted the transformative approach embraced by the DMV, stating, “This is only the latest example of the transformation that’s reshaping the way the DMV does business.” She emphasized the convenience of this new feature, mentioning it "reduces the need for at-window services, and gives aspiring drivers more opportunities to take and pass their written test.”
Hosted on ITI’s KnowToDrive Online, this remote testing platform instills confidence in the virtual testing environment. “We feel very confident in ITI’s virtual testing environment,” Butler remarked. “The rules are very fair, and the pass/fail rates are nearly identical to in-office testing.”
KnowToDrive Online caters to a wider audience by supporting tests in both English and Spanish, utilizing any computer equipped with a front-facing camera or camera peripheral. Post-test, it immediately furnishes the applicants with their scores and, for successful candidates, provides subsequent procedural guidance.
The test, priced at $6.75, is available once daily with a time cap of 60 minutes. The DMV has stipulated that a test taken online cannot be retaken in-person at an office on the same day.
